The facade visualizes the woven structure of fabric, demonstrating both functionality and aesthetics through the outstanding performance of Hankuk Carbon’s composites.</p> <p><br /> The installation reinterprets the concept of the fabric's intersection, visualizing the idea that “strength emerges through intersection.” Closely aligned with the event's theme, “Radically More Human,” the work exhibits the values of communication and collaboration through the woven structure in which individual fibers intersect to become a firm fabric.</p> <p><br /> Mirrors are placed in the voids created by the crossing panels, inviting people to reflect and participate. As visitors see their own reflections, they are prompted to contemplate their presence and place within the urban landscape. Different perspectives converge in front of the wall, giving rise to new interpretations and inspiration. In these moments of intersection, the “wall” transforms: no longer a boundary, but an engaging space for connection and contemplation.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> <span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Function and Aesthetics: Hankuk Carbon Facade Materials</strong></span><br /> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.hcarbon.com/upload/ckeditor/10e52c74-07d7-4313-9db3-70aca55a4e1b.png" style="width: 100%;" /></p> <p><br /> The facade material applied to 〈The Intersection Wall〉 exemplifies the intersection of functionality and aesthetics—going beyond form to express design flexibility, functionality, and sustainability all at once.</p> <p><br /> <strong>▪ Design Flexibility</strong><br /> Like woven fabric, the flexible panels interlace and form curve surfaces that convey rhythm and motion. This was made possible by the design flexibility of Hankuk Carbon’s facade material, capable of realizing large-scale, 3-dimensional curves. It represents the process through which technological excellence evolves into cultural and artistic value.</p> <p><br /> <strong>▪ Functionality</strong><br /> Lighter yet stronger than conventional materials, it improves construction efficiency while minimizing structural load—making it an optimal solution for both new builds and renovations. This advantage is clearly demonstrated in the panels, which, though hollow, maintain a rigid and stable form thanks to their exceptional strength. In response to the building regulations becoming increasingly strict, the material has been certified by a KOLAS-accredited organization as semi-nonflammable, providing enhanced fire resistance and safety.</p> <p><br /> <strong>▪ Sustainability</strong><br /> The composite offers outstanding durability and corrosion resistance, reducing maintenance costs and extending building lifespan. Its thermal insulation properties help moderate temperature fluctuations, reducing heating and cooling energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions. Notably, the work was created using stock materials, illustrating Hankuk Carbon’s commitment to sustainability throughout the design and production process.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>〈The Intersection Wall〉 stands at the crossroads of technology and design, industry and culture—aiming toward a more human-centered urban architecture. In this episode, we will explore how these materials are shaping the bright future of the railway industry with their boundless potential.</p> <p> </p> <p>The steam locomotive, invented in Britain in 1802, is considered one of the most significant innovations of the 19th century. It unlocked the potential of an efficient railway system for transporting goods and dramatically changed how people moved, bringing about substantial societal and economic shifts. The heavy and slow early railway vehicles rapidly evolved with the Industrial Revolution into today's modern and fast trains. This evolution was driven by relentless technological innovation to enhance railway vehicles' efficiency and safety. Among these innovations, the introduction of composite materials has opened up new possibilities for the railway industry.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> <span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>Key Characteristics of Railway Composite Materials: Lightweight, Durable, and Fire-Retardant</strong></span></p> <p> </p> <p>The core advantage of composite materials for railways lies in their lightweight properties. Lowering the weight of railway vehicles is crucial for improving fuel efficiency and reducing transportation costs. Composite materials offer excellent lightweight characteristics, significantly reducing the weight of railway vehicles. For example, carbon fiber composites maintain high strength and stiffness while being much lighter than metal materials. This weight reduction contributes to lower energy consumption and higher operating speeds.</p> <p> </p> <p>Composite materials also provide high durability, extending the lifespan of vehicles and reducing maintenance costs. Therefore, they are mainly used in high-speed trains requiring greater speeds and wear resistance than regular trains. They are often applied in the cab mask, which is considered the face of the railway vehicle. For instance, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) are widely used as structural materials for railway vehicles due to their high strength and lightweight properties. Composite materials are also extensively used in the interior and exterior of a rail car, including seats, flooring, ceilings, window masks, and wall panels.</p> <p> </p> <p>Safety is another critical element in the railway industry. Composite materials offer excellent flame resistance, which significantly helps protect passengers and vehicles in the event of a fire. Thermosetting composites do not deform even at high temperatures, and because they minimize toxic gas emissions, they can reduce damage.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> <span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>The Future of Railways with Hankuk Carbon's Railway Parts Division</strong></span></p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="" src="https://www.hcarbon.com/upload/ckeditor/4191a850-532c-483f-9906-bff1f388ecb6.jpg" style="width: 70%;" /></p> <p> </p> <p>Launched in April 2020, Hankuk Carbon's Railway Parts Division is at the forefront of innovation, maximizing the potential of composite materials in the rail industry. They design and manufacture various components necessary for railway vehicles, providing innovative railway vehicle solutions using composite materials and closely collaborating with related companies. Hankuk Carbon was the first South Korean composite firm to receive the certification of ISO/TS 22163:2017 International Railway Industry Standard Quality Management System. In 2023, we additionally obtained certification for our Vietnam plant.</p> <p> </p> <p>Moreover, our internally developed phenol prepreg HC1126 meets the worldwide standards for railway vehicles with its excellent strength and durability. Equipped with independent factory facilities and workforce, Hankuk Carbon collaborates with its headquarters, Vietnam plant, and c2i to provide solutions that can produce everything from railway materials to components and modules.</p> <p> </p> <p>Starting with the air conditioning covers for 150 EMU-150 train cars, Hankuk Carbon has received orders for interior panels, driver's panels, and other components used in the driver's cab and attached rooms. We have also received quality certification for our products from clients. For 208 EMU-150 train cars, we have secured orders for all composite materials applied to passenger cars (cab mask, window mask, and restroom module), transitioning from a materials-focused approach to component production and aiming to enter the global market.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> In September 2024, Hankuk Carbon is participating in InnoTrans, the world's largest railway trade fair, showcasing its excellent railway materials and technologies. Held every two years in Berlin, Germany, InnoTrans is a crucial event where various international mobility companies gather to share the latest railway technologies and trends.</p> <p> </p> <p>As we pursue the advancement of railway vehicle components through composite materials, we are also accelerating our efforts to enter the global railway market, leveraging capabilities from materials to components and modularization. When applied with heat and pressure, the prepreg becomes a lightweight material with excellent physical properties. Such intuitive design embodies the production process of composite materials, effectively showcasing Hankuk Carbon's identity.</p> <p> </p> <p>■ The window size varies from floor to floor due to the external panels that intersect solidly toward the ground. Adjusting the amount of sunlight by height creates a diverse atmosphere. The well-lit space constructs a free and creative research environment with a space for more innovative ideas.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-size:20px;"><strong>GFRP Exterior with Functionality, Sustainability, and Aesthetics</strong></span></p> <p><br /> The outer panel of Hankuk Carbon I&I Center was made of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) produced by Hankuk Carbon. Our GFRP is specially developed as a building exterior material, contributing to the development of architectural culture with various advantages.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Functionality</strong><br /> GFRP, also used in railroad cars, has excellent insulation and fire-retardant properties. It successfully promotes the building's safety and energy efficiency.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Sustainability</strong><br /> GFRP has a life cycle impact (LCI) of 39% lower than conventional concrete materials. It is lighter than steel, which reduces the load on the building to ensure structural stability and reduces maintenance costs through excellent durability.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Aesthetics</strong><br /> Through the characteristics of GFRP with high design freedom, the facade expresses a unique, elegant, three-dimensional curved surface, setting itself apart from conventional monotonous building design.</p> <p> </p> <p><br /> Located in the Magok Industrial Complex, Hankuk Carbon I&I Center aims to express its potential as a central hub to connect to the global market.
